Yahoo! pada awalnya hanyalah semacam bookmark (petunjuk halaman buku), ide itu berawal pada bulan April 1994, di mana saat itu dua orang alumni Universitas Stanford mendapat liburan ketika profesor mereka pergi ke luar kota karena cuti besar.
Mahasiswa teknik David Filo dan Jerry Yang mempunyai sedikit pekerjaan yang harus dilakukan selain menjelajah internet. Mereka tidak membutuhkan waktu lama untuk mengkompilasi sebuah daftar bookmark yang besar, yang dikelompokkan berdasarkan subyek.
Kemudian mereka berfikir, mengapa tidak memasukannya di web? Mereka kemudian bekerja membuat sebuah program database untuk menanganinya, yang dapat memberikan hasil secara online.
Koleksi bookmark tersebut, sekarang dikenal sebagai Yahoo!, menerima sejumlah 80 juta pengunjung setiap bulan (sensus tahun 2000) kekarang berapa yaaaa????

Obama's housing plan 'to help 9m'
President Barack Obama has revealed a long-awaited plan to tackle the US housing crisis, aiming to help up to nine million families.
The plan will provide refinancing to four to five million "responsible homeowners" on the verge of defaulting.
A $75bn (£53bn) fund will also aim to help reduce monthly payments for a further three to four million people, to no more than 31% of their income.
President Obama unveiled the details in a speech at an Arizona high school.
He stressed that the plan focused on helping families who had "played by the rules" and would not help lenders or borrowers who had acted irresponsibly.
The announcement came one day after President Obama signed into law a $787bn (£548bn) economic stimulus package.
Help for homeowners
Falling house prices have been at the heart of the problems in the financial sector.
More than one million people in the US have lost their homes in the housing crisis, and President Obama said a further six million homes were at risk of foreclosure.
"All of us are paying a price for this home mortgage crisis," he said.
The plan is designed to assist "underwater" homeowners - those who owe more on their mortgages than their homes are now worth, as well as those on the verge of foreclosure.
President Obama said it could provide a buffer of up to $6,000 against declining values on the average home.
He also revealed a further $200bn in Treasury funding to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which underwrite more than half of all US mortgages.
Fannie and Freddie would also have to change their policy on refinancing, he said.
Currently they will only refinance borrowers with mortgages up to 80% of the value of their home.
This plan abolishes that rule though, so that "underwater" homeowners could now refinance.
Mixed reaction
"By addressing the foreclosure crisis directly, the administration's housing plan finally begins to plug the holes that cause the problem," the Center for Responsible Lending said in a statement.
However, others were less optimistic.
"[The plan] seems to offer little help to borrowers whose loan exceeds their property value by more than 5%," said John Courson, chief executive of the Mortgage Bankers Association.
US markets closed flat as investors greeted the plan with caution.
Earlier, official data showed the rate of construction of new homes in the US fell to a 50-year low.

Facebook 'withdraws' data changes
The founder of Facebook says the social network will return to its previous terms of service regarding user data.
In a blog post Mark Zuckerberg said the move was temporary "while we resolve the issues that people have raised".
Users had complained after new terms of service seemed to suggest Facebook would retain personal data even if someone deleted their account.
Originally defending the changes, Mr Zuckerberg had said it was to better reflect how people used the site.
He had said the changes were made to ensure that if a user deleted his or her account any comments or messages he or she had left on a friend's Facebook page would not also disappear.
'Received questions'
In his updated blog entry, Mr Zuckerberg said: "the past couple of days, we received a lot of questions and comments about the changes and what they mean for people and their information. Based on this feedback, we have decided to return to our previous terms of use while we resolve the issues that people have raised."
Facebook users were advised on the change with a notice posted to their pages when logging in to the service.
He added: "Our next version will be a substantial revision from where we are now. It will reflect the principles I described yesterday around how people share and control their information, and it will be written clearly in language everyone can understand."
He said Facebook would draw up a new governing document in conjunction with its users.
The row and reaction to the Facebook changes to its terms of service reflect a wider issue about user data and who owns the personal information - from comments, to photos and videos - stored on social network accounts, and what happens to it if a user decides to leave a service.
'Breach of faith'
Simon Davies of Privacy International called the change "a breach of faith by Facebook".
"People are entitled to be outraged. It flies in the face of the commitments that the company made to protect user privacy and to improve user controls," he told BBC News.
Mr Davies criticised the company for allowing commercial and legal concerns to override its commitment to users, saying: "It appears to be going down the same road as Google. Its halo is starting to slip."
"Now, there are other kids on the block, like Twitter, Facebook can only survive a certain number of disasters like this. It will only last three years if it continues to make these errors."
Facebook should commit to a privacy policy that would allow users to delete all data from its systems, including back-ups, within a specified time period, recommended Mr Davies.
Formal complaint
He also advised users to "ratchet their privacy settings up to the maximum" to restrict advertisers' access to their data and ensure that their details are fully protected.
Earlier this week Mr Zuckerberg had likened the persistence of data across the social network, even after a user had decided to leave the service, to e-mail.
In the US, public interest group, the Electronic Privacy Information Center had warned it would file a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission about the new terms of service.
"We think that Facebook should go back to its original terms of service," Epic's executive director Marc Rotenberg, told PC World website.
